1NZ-FE or 1NZ-FXE? Keep the full code on your engine request.

A listing marked “1NZ, 1.5 petrol” leaves an important question unanswered: is it the conventional petrol 1NZ-FE or the petrol engine from a hybrid powertrain, 1NZ-FXE? Resolve that before comparing used-engine offers.

The difference that matters

1NZ-FE and 1NZ-FXE are different full engine designations. Toyota documents 1NZ-FE in the 2001 UK Yaris T Sport and 1NZ-FXE in its third-generation Yaris Hybrid. Both examples have a published displacement of 1,497 cc, but the hybrid example has different compression and power figures. “1NZ” or “1.5 litre” alone cannot specify which assembly you need.

This comparison is for identifying a replacement requirement. It does not establish that either engine can be installed in place of the other. Have the workshop check the intended vehicle, powertrain and relevant parts references before approving a replacement.

When an enquiry says only “1NZ”

  1. Recover the full identifier. Request a readable image of the original engine marking and the vehicle identification plate. Keep any serial information with the internal requirement record; do not shorten FXE to FE.
  2. Identify the receiving powertrain. Record vehicle model, year, original market and whether it is a hybrid. Add the VIN or chassis reference when available for a technical fitment check.
  3. Separate the engine from the surrounding system. List the engine assembly, wiring, control units and any required transmission or hybrid-system components separately. A photograph of an engine does not establish that those other components are supplied.
  4. Resolve the match before acceptance. Ask the supplier to state the full designation offered. Ask your technician to compare the requested assembly and interfaces with the proposed unit. Leave an unresolved field as “To confirm”.

A useful 1NZ requirement record

Use one line for each full code and receiving application. The downloadable worksheet has columns for hybrid status, vehicle identity, gearbox or transaxle reference, required components and unresolved checks. It contains no assumed fitment or inventory.

For example, a request reading “1NZ-FXE; Yaris Hybrid; year and chassis reference attached; engine assembly required; wiring and control units to be confirmed” gives the team a specific question to check. A request reading “1NZ complete” does not. A supplier still needs to confirm the actual unit and scope; an example is not an offer.

Questions before selecting a used 1NZ

Does the same displacement mean the engines are interchangeable?

No. Matching displacement does not prove compatibility. Keep the FE or FXE designation and have the receiving vehicle and parts references checked.

Is a 1NZ-FXE engine a complete hybrid powertrain?

Not by that description alone. Ask the quotation to identify exactly which engine, electrical and drivetrain components are included.

Can a catalogue entry labelled 1NZ confirm FE or FXE?

Not if the suffix is missing. Use it as a sourcing reference and submit the full requirement for confirmation. LSVANT’s 1NZ directory search is a starting point, not a verified substitution list.
