2NZ-FE vs 2SZ-FE: “Vitz 1.3” is not a full engine identity.

Two 1.3-litre Vitz descriptions can refer to different engine families. Toyota’s 2005 Japanese Vitz record gives a concrete example: SCP90 with 2SZ-FE and NCP95 with 2NZ-FE.

Start with the code, not the badge

2NZ-FE and 2SZ-FE are separate engine codes. In Toyota’s historical record for the second-generation Vitz released in Japan on 1 February 2005, the representative 1.3 U grade uses 2SZ-FE and the 1.3 F grade shown uses 2NZ-FE. Both are described as 1.3-litre cars. The vehicle name and rounded capacity therefore do not identify the engine.

The useful question for a used-engine enquiry is not “Which 1.3 is best?” It is “Which full engine identity and vehicle version am I replacing?” This page helps resolve that question without turning a historical application example into a universal fitment table.

Toyota also identifies the 2NZ-FE application in this generation’s Japanese range as the 1.3-litre 4WD version. That statement is limited to the range described in this record: it does not mean every 2NZ-FE application is 4WD. The same published output in the table does not establish that the engines, electronics or transmission interfaces can be substituted.

Resolve an unclear “Vitz / Yaris 1.3” request

  1. Read the vehicle model type. Copy the complete plate entry, including the letters around the number, rather than sending “90 series”. In the documented example, SCP90 and NCP95 lead to different engine codes.
  2. Read the engine marking separately. An engine may have been replaced during the vehicle’s life. Record what the vehicle documents specify and what is actually fitted. If they disagree, flag the discrepancy for the workshop; do not silently choose one.
  3. Record the drivetrain and transmission. Write 2WD or 4WD and the actual gearbox type or code, if known. Do not infer these from a generic online listing.
  4. Compare the offered assembly. Request views of the mounting arrangement, sump, intake and exhaust, electrical connectors and transmission interface. Your technician should decide whether they match the receiving vehicle.

Keep the two requirements separate in a buying list

Use separate rows for 2NZ-FE and 2SZ-FE even if the end customer calls both “Vitz 1.3”. Add another row if the receiving version or requested component scope differs. This prevents a quantity total from concealing two different requirements.

Download the Vitz 1.3 identification worksheet (CSV)

The worksheet separates the code specified by the vehicle documentation, the marking on the fitted engine and the code offered by the supplier. It gives the workshop a place to resolve a mismatch before purchase. Write “To confirm” where the evidence is missing.

LSVANT has directory entries under 2NZ and 2SZ. These catalogue labels support a sourcing conversation. They do not prove that a particular offered unit has the full FE suffix, matches your vehicle or is currently available.

Questions about 2NZ-FE and 2SZ-FE

Can I order from a 1.3-litre description alone?

No. The manufacturer example shows why capacity alone is insufficient. Send full identifiers and receiving-vehicle details.

Does this table cover every Yaris sold worldwide?

No. It describes representative grades in the Japanese 2005 Vitz record. Check the year and original market of the vehicle you are working on.

What if the engine marking is unreadable?

Send the plate and available vehicle records, explain which identifier is missing and ask for a technical check. Do not treat a catalogue thumbnail or engine-cover appearance as proof of identity.
